If Walls Could Dance…

If Walls Could Dance... is a large-scale public video installation that was commissioned by the Philadelphia Dance Projects celebrating the organization's 25-year history of dance.

For this commission, I created a short animated video that I designed to be projection mapped onto the side of a 50-ft. building in downtown Philadephia. My animated work was created by processing actual footage of dancers. I used VDMX, an effects-based live performance program, and Touch Designer, a 3D compositing application, to manipulate the footage to create an abstract representation of the dancer's motion.

To project the image large and bright enough, I rented a 20k-lumen video projector mounted on rolling scaffolding so it could easily be re-positioned. I used Mad Mapper, a program for mapping video onto non-traditional surfaces, to map the image onto the wall. The installation was presented for three nights as part of a celebration for the Philadelphia Dance Projects.
